I specially selected the open-air portraits in a separate album. The fact is for me this is a rather specific genre, since I am, first of all, a studio photographer. And it means I try to control the light, not only choosing the time of day and the direction of shooting, but precisely controlling it. I love flashes)
Therefore, for almost any shooting outside the studio, where I need to work with a person, with his emotions and image, I take flash. And these are by no means on-camera flash-guns, but true studio light with soft boxes, beauty-dishes, honeycombs and other light modifiers. Even on my infrequent wedding shoots, I have several sets of studio lights in my car, which I use as needed.
This story originated from a WWII poster on the wall of the friend’s house. The famous picture of a girl driving in a British uniform and the slogan "It's in your hands to take a short cut" in Hebrew. Then the famous poster "We can do it!" and numerous pin-up style photos of American defense factories female-workers from "Life".
Our life here should contain at least minimal echoes of some kind of heroism, otherwise it's boring. Therefore, we, one way or another, are constantly returning to the culmination moments of the civilization history. Otherwise, the fight against false enemies for false values.
First, I painted the welder's mask, with a small is a hint of both Baron von Richthofen's fighter and G.I.'s helmet, then I bought a studio flash - the light should not be "natural", and then I found the model.
These two pictures are our first approach to the topic. Model Lena Vasilieva, filmed on the factory yard of "Ligro Matekhet" LTd.
Once I was lucky to shoot a lovely young lady on the eve of her Bat Mitzvah. Lucky, since the young lady had a direction for creative ideas, either a nickname, or a slogan. "Girl-speaking-with-the-desert." Not to mention, she is very lovely and model gifted.
I didn’t made complicated costume scenes, although I'd composed something like a shaman’s staff. We just drove into the nearest desert and just filmed. Well, I added artificial light, because the story is dreamy).
A few days ago we talked to my son about art and painting and among other things we went through a book of paintings by Mikhail Vrubel - a huge Russian painter who is not so famous in our time. On purpose, we looked at his painting "The seating daemon", a very impressive and one of my favourites. We immediately wanted to do something in this style, we came over to Tel Sharuhan whose western slope is protected from the wind and soft-boxes do not play sail's role and do not drop flashes down. There we took some pictures and here they are.
Recently I photographed Shahar - before his bar-mitzvah. I was with my son as an assistant, and Shahar was with his mother Keren and his younger brother Or as a group of supporters and a transport team.
Shahar is a serious off-road cyclist, and his passion has turned to become the subject of photography.
I shot at sunset, in strong backlight, so I used a 600W flash with octabox of 120 cm diameter. I hope it looks relatively natural.
